Excellence in Every Detail
History of the American Board of Oral Implantology
Our institution exists to uphold quality in implant dentistry and support its ongoing evolution.
Founded in 1969 to elevate standards in implant dentistry, ABOI/ID is an independent certifying board recognized within organized dentistry for its rigorous, scientifically validated examinations. Our mission is to certify dentists at the highest level across diagnosis, surgery, prosthetics, and aftercare—so patients can find proven expertise and institutions can rely on a consistent, independently verified standard.
Standardizing Excellence
ABOI is an ABDS-recognized certifying board for Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry. That recognition helps hospitals, schools, and patients know the credential meets a clear, profession-wide bar.
Advancing the Field
We encourage the study of implant dentistry and supports better practice—through exam blueprints tied to current evidence, maintenance of certification that keeps skills fresh, and professional collaboration to raise day-to-day standards of care.
Our Role
What ABOI/ID Does
We conduct secure, validated examinations that measure comprehensive competence across the surgical and restorative continuum—and the aftercare that follows. Successful candidates earn the Diplomate credential.
ABOI also maintains a registry of certified Diplomates that serves the public, professionals, hospitals, and dental schools seeking verified expertise in implant dentistry. These activities uphold rigorous, unbiased standards while making it easier for patients and institutions to identify proven competency.
