Written Examination

Part I: Written Examination

Written Exam Overview

As the first of two examinations, the Written Exam asks candidates to apply their implant dentistry knowledge to real clinical situations through a multiple-choice format.

The examination consists of 200 multiple-choice questions, each requiring candidates to choose the single best answer. Questions reflect the essential knowledge areas defined by the ABOI/ID Examination Committee, and the exam is administered at secure Pearson VUE testing centers.

Practice Analysis and Test Design

Each edition of the examination is developed according to the Test Specifications, which are based on practice analyses conducted with ABOI/ID Diplomates. These analyses identify the activities essential to delivering safe and effective patient care, and the Board updates them periodically to keep the Specifications current. Candidates preparing for the examination should review the Test Specifications carefully.

After the Exam

Candidates who pass Part I become eligible for the Part II Oral/Case Examination. Those who do not pass may reapply for a future administration according to ABOI/ID policies.
