CERTIFICATION PATHWAY
Paths to Certification
ABOI/ID offers several routes to certification so qualified dentists—across different training experiences, specialties, and locations—can meet a consistent standard of excellence.
Depending on your route, you may complete a written and/or oral examination as part of the certification process. Once you know your path, you’ll find clear guidance to help you prepare your application with confidence.

Route 1: General dentists (United States and Canada)
This path is for licensed practicing dentists in the U.S. or Canada who hold a DMD, DDS, or equivalent degree and have developed meaningful experience in implant dentistry. If you’ve strengthened your skills through continuing education, mentoring, and hands-on clinical work, this route supports your next step toward earning a respected, nationally recognized credential.
Route 2: International dentists
This path is for dentists practicing outside the United States or Canada who hold a dental degree recognized in their home country and can document appropriate training and experience in implant dentistry. If you’re looking to demonstrate your expertise through a credential respected for its rigor and fairness, this route provides clear guidance for international applicants.
Route 3: Specialists
Dentists who have completed a CODA-accredited specialty program—such as periodontology, prosthodontics, or oral and maxillofacial surgery—and hold an active dental license may qualify through the specialty route. This path acknowledges your advanced education while offering a structured way to demonstrate comprehensive implant competency beyond your specialty focus.
